I refer to the requirement under the
Disability Services Act 1993
that public authorities develop and implement a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) that outlines the manner in which people with disabilities are provided with equal access to facilities and services, and the way in which this is being applied by the Kimberley Training Institute (KTI) in Broome, and I ask —
(1) Is the Minister aware that the Pearler's Shed Restaurant, which is the venue for the Hospitality Course run by the Kimberley Training Institute (KTI) in Broome, is in contravention of KTI's own Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) and precludes some prospective students from participating?
(2) What measures will the Minister take to rectify the situation?
(3) What was the cost to the Government of renovations made to the Pearler's Shed Restaurant so that the Hospitality Course could be held there?

(1) Kimberley Training Institute (KTI) has advised it has leased the Pearler's Shed Restaurant for the delivery of Hospitality courses while it works towards the provision of long term facilities that provide equal access for people with a disability. KTI recognises there are shortcomings with this facility and has an alternative venue available at St Mary's College in Broome, for Hospitality course delivery which is accessible for people with a disability.
(2) The Institute has advised its alternative venue at St Mary's College in Broome remains an ongoing option to utilise as necessary and required for training delivery to people with a disability.
The Institute has further advised its future Master Plan provides for onsite facilities with full disability access and is continuously working towards improving on achieving the outcomes identified in its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. The Institute's progress against its Plan is reported to the Disability Services Commission on an annual basis.
(3) The cost of renovations and fit-out to the Pearler's Shed Restaurant was $107 926.
Kimberley Training Institute has advised it assessed all available options for the imminent need of a venue suitable for the delivery of Hospitality training. Availability was very limited in Broome with no facilities meeting the criteria of providing people full disability access. The Pearler's Shed Restaurant was leased and renovated by the Institute for the delivery of Hospitality courses while it works towards the provision of long term facilities that provide equal access for people with a disability.
