What a really interesting question
from the member for Cockburn. He has taken a totally simplistic single-line
approach to something as complex as training. Mr Speaker, you will remember me
talking a few weeks ago —
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cockburn, I call you to order for the second time and
the member for Girrawheen for the first time. A quick answer through the Chair,
please, minister.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : Mr Speaker, you will remember a few weeks ago when we were
talking about jobs, the economy and workforce development—I think it
was in private members' time—we were talking about how priority
skills had shifted students away from choosing courses in areas in which there
were no employment opportunities such as multimedia.
Ms
R. Saffioti interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for West Swan, that is enough. I call you to order for the
first time.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : Shifting students from courses —
Mr
P.B. Watson interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Albany, I call you to order for the first time.
Point of Order
Mrs
M.H. ROBERTS : Mr Speaker, supplementary questions are supposed to be
to the point, and the answers are, too. It was a simple question: can the
minister name one course? That is all we are waiting for.
The
SPEAKER : Minister.

Mrs L.M. HARVEY :
As an example, through Future Skills WA, we have shifted students from making
decisions about their future—for instance, from receiving training in
multimedia into receiving training in graphic design. We know that if students
become trained in web design or graphic design, they will be in a training
program that leads to employment. That is what Future Skills is all about—ensuring
that we continue to get people trained in priority areas that lead to
employment. We remain committed to that. I know that members opposite do not
like it but it is working.
Point of Order
Mrs
M.H. ROBERTS : The minister was asked to specify one new course and
she still has not answered the supplementary question.
The
SPEAKER : She has finished the answer. I cannot force her to answer
that.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Order! That question has finished.
