I thank the member for Belmont. I believe
the member for Belmont is the greatest member for Belmont this Parliament has
seen. The member for Belmont is an absolute champion for the people of Belmont,
particularly the small business owners of Belmont. I thank her for the
question.
The business migration program is
very important and significant to the economy of Western Australia. A lot of
people do not quite understand what it does. Essentially, the business migrants
brought to this great state of ours broaden the state's economy and are
a leading source of new capital investment, export income and business and
employment generation. The Small Business Development Corporation manages the
successful business migration program on behalf of the people of Western Australia.
To be nominated, applicants must satisfy a range of criteria and demonstrate
they can contribute to the economy of this great state of ours. Once they are
nominated, the final determination is made by the commonwealth Department of
Immigration and Border Protection. The success of this program is in the data
that has come to hand. Over the past four years business migration has invested
more than $1.1 billion into the Western Australian economy. It has created over
700 jobs. This financial year alone, from July 2015 to April 2016, 174 new
business migrants from over 30 countries, plus an additional 122 business
migrants, have finalised their investment programs in Western Australia. Those
finalised projects injected a further $276 million into our economy and created
144 new jobs. They also enabled 11 new exporting businesses. Exporting
businesses from Western Australia are great for our state, great for jobs and
great for the nation.
The types of areas these business
migrants invest and set up their businesses in are mineral resources,
agriculture, retail, property development, technology and manufacturing. The
Small Business Development Corporation cooperates with local Western Australian
trade offices, chambers of commerce and migration agents to ensure that we get
the best businesses coming out to invest in Western Australia. This is a fantastic
program. Once again, I thank the member for Belmont for her support of the
businesses in her great electorate of Belmont. I know they value her
contribution. This program is great for the state of Western Australia because
it helps broaden our economy through increased investment and fantastic job
creation.
