TEACHERS -
INTERSTATE APPLICANTS
711. Dr E. CONSTABLE to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I bring to the minister's attention the plight of an
experienced Western Australian trained teacher and literacy expert, currently
teaching in Melbourne, who applied to teach in the Pilbara district four months
ago.
(1) Is it
usual for an interstate applicant not to have received a reply from the
Department of Education and Training after four months?
(2) Is it
standard practice to expect a prospective employee to telephone more than 15
times about the status of her application, only to be fobbed off and to be told
her application has not been looked at?
(3) What does
the minister intend to do about the mess in the staffing branch of the
Department of Education and Training?

(1)-(3) The member for Churchlands
has been in this place since 1990 -
Dr
E. Constable : Since 1991.
Mr
M. McGOWAN : - and after 17 years she
would know that to ask me about an individual -
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr
M. McGOWAN : - she would give a
little bit of notice of the question. It
is pathetic.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : The members on my left think that the member
for Churchlands needs assistance in pushing her case; I am sure that is not the
case. The member for Churchlands asked
the question and the minister should be allowed to answer it.
Mr
M. McGOWAN : I have some respect for
the member for Churchlands , but she should
know better than to come into this place and put forward a case that, as far as
I know, could be hypothetical. If the
member for Churchlands gives me a little bit of notice, I will get her the exact
facts of the case.
