TEACHING HOSPITALS, DISTRIBUTION OF FINANCIAL RESOURCES
I was pleased to hear in the Governor’s speech that the Gallop Government would oversee a fair distribution of monetary resources to the four teaching hospitals. As the Premier knows, my electorate is serviced by Fremantle Hospital. The figures just given by the Minister for Health clearly show that once again Fremantle Hospital appears to be the poor relation in this monetary distribution. What is the Premier’s response? Dr GALLOP

The allocation of funds to each of the hospitals is based upon their relative need, the population that they service and the facilities that are in place. The monetary allocation to particular hospitals will differ according to the role they play in the system. Fremantle Hospital plays a crucial role. Over the years, it has been an innovative hospital and it now has a major mental health facility attached to it. It works in cooperation with other hospitals in the south metropolitan area to ensure a rational distribution of functions throughout that region. I assure the member that we stand by our commitment that there will be a fair distribution of hospital resources throughout the metropolitan area based upon the needs of those hospitals and the populations they serve. There is no evidence to indicate that Fremantle Hospital has been disadvantaged in any way by the budget allocations. We are confident that the funds are adequate for the jobs to be done at the hospital with the skilled staff it has available. Should the member want any particular issues to be addressed, I am sure that the Minister for Health would be happy to consider them.
