612. Hon KATE DOUST to the Leader of the House representing
the Minister for State Development:
I refer to the Western Australian trade and investment office
in Jakarta and the Christmas Island resort.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that any officer or officers from the Jakarta office have been
involved in discussions in relation to the reopening of the Christmas Island
casino; and, if so, who are they?
(2) Will he
provide the names of the parties who have held discussions with the Jakarta
office regarding the Christmas Island casino; and, if not, why not?
(3) Has the
Jakarta office been dealing with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship
in relation to visa arrangements for Indonesians wanting to visit Christmas
Island for the purpose of visiting the casino; and, if so, what is the nature
of this involvement?
(4) Why is a state government office involved in this issue?

Indonesian and an Australian investor approached the trade office for
information, mistakenly believing that Christmas Island was under the
jurisdiction of Western Australia. The regional director referred them to Mr Simon
Millcock, the economic development officer for Australia's Indian Ocean
territories.
