PALCOHOL
582. Hon MARTIN PRITCHARD to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to Palcohol , a form of powdered
alcohol, which is expected to be available for sale soon in the United States.
(1) Is the state government following VictoriaXXX ###XXXs lead and taking steps to make the
production, sale, consumption and possession of this product illegal in Western
Australia; and, if so, what steps have already been taken?
(2) Has the state government written to the
federal government requesting that importation of this product be made illegal;
and, if not, will the state undertake to make this request as a matter of
urgency?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) No. Discussions have been initiated with
the Department of HealthXXX ###XXXs public health
division food unit as to its possible regulation as a food product. The
Victorian government has also initiated discussions with its liquor licensing
counterparts in all jurisdictions, including Western Australia.
(2) No. The issue will be discussed at the July 2015 intergovernmental
committee on drugs meeting.
