I refer to a report compiled by the Queensland Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian that pinpoints suicide as a leading cause of death among children - at least one a month in Queensland in the 10 to 17-year age bracket. (1) In each year since 1980, what is the incidence of suicides in Western Australia of children in care institutionally and in foster homes? (2) In the same period, what is the incidence of suicides of people in WA who have formerly been in care institutionally and in foster homes? (3) If no figures have been compiled, will the minister commission a report or liaise with the coroner or other appropriate authorities to provide a report and, if not, why not? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the member for some notice of this question. Clear information about this issue has been available only since the Gallop government established the Child Deaths Review Committee in January 2003, so I advise as follows - (1) Departmental statistics since February 2003 on the incidence of suicides of children or young people in the department’s care indicate that no children or young people have committed suicide. (2) Statistics on the incidence of suicide of children or young people who have left care are not available. (3) The department and Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention are progressing a research partnership, which will undertake a study on suicide and its relation to children in care.
