ST JOHN AMBULANCE — REVIEW
I refer to the minister’s answer to my question asked yesterday concerning St John Ambulance and the December 2010 report tabled by the minister. (1) What further assessment of the south west region ambulance service is being undertaken by the WA Country Health Service as part of the regionalisation strategy? (2) Is the reference to the new SJA contract in the December 2010 report a reference to the same four-year contract that is yet to be finalised and signed between the state government and SJA? (3) If yes to (2), what is the commencement and end date of the four-year contract? (4) Has the geographical split between metropolitan and country regions detailed in recommendation 3 on page 7 of the December 2010 report been achieved; and, if yes, when and how has this improved response times and capacity? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me through the Minister for Health — (1) St John Ambulance’s regionalisation strategy aims to improve local ambulance responsiveness through devolved decision making. This will be assisted by aligning St John Ambulance’s regional operations with the WA Country Health Service regions, which will facilitate joint planning and decision making in each country region. (2) Yes. (3) It is a three-year contract covering the period 2010–11 to 2012–13. (4) St John Ambulance is committed to implementing dedicated resources to manage country call taking and ambulance dispatch within its call centre. This initiative will be implemented in the second half of 2011 using additional resources approved by the state government.
