I noticed a media statement in recent days that referred to the expansion of the marine community monitoring program. Will the minister advise the House what the program is and what it delivers for the State? Dr J.M. EDWARDS

I thank the member for the question and the opportunity to give members some information about this program. It is a very important program, because it engages the community in working hands-on with departmental officials in helping to monitor the marine environment. I had a very pleasant morning last Friday in the ocean at Trigg with the Friends of Marmion Marine Park, inspecting the transect its members go out on regularly looking at the impacts of emerging ground water where the waves break at Trigg. This is a very important program. It links the people who live locally with their local environment. It teaches us all what is happening with the ground water as it is expressed at that site, and it gives us a lot of valuable information about that marine park. I am delighted that the marine community monitoring program has been expanded. We have a new project officer who is now taking that program out to dive clubs, charter boat operators and other community groups to get them involved. There is a new manual, and I urge members with any coastal environment in their electorates to have a look at that manual and encourage their own groups to actively get their hands wet in an effort to better protect our environment.
