The State Government uses population forecasts for strategic planning purposes to plan for long-term population growth.
The Department of Planning, in its role as the State's demographer, forecasts estimated resident population throughout the State for the Western Australia Planning Commission (WAPC). These are based on assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration. The information is used by various State government agencies to plan for changing demands.
The WAPC publishes these forecasts regularly in its 'Western Australia Tomorrow' population reports. In February 2012, the WAPC released the latest in the Western Australia Tomorrow series of population forecasts, which are available on the WA planning website at
www.planning.wa.gov.au/publications/6194.asp
.
Strategic planning, such as
Directions 2031 and Beyond
(WAPC, August 2010), uses these forecasts as the basis for scenario planning to consider long-term growth outcomes for the metropolitan Perth and Peel regions.
Directions 2031 and Beyond
considered two possibilities: the estimated population of 2.2 million people by 2031 as per the forecast in
Western Australia Tomorrow Report No. 6
(WAPC, 2005) and the doubling of the population to 3.5 million, whenever that may occur.
The latest
Western Australia Tomorrow Report No. 7
(WAPC, 2012) forecast metropolitan Perth and Peel to have a population of around 2.32 million to 2.52 million by 2026. This is higher than the previous forecast of about 2.09 million.
