SCHOOLS
— STAFF — ASSAULTS
412. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Education:
I refer the minister to the ABC's coverage of violent
assaults in WA schools, published in July 2023, which noted that there had been 2 275 reported incidents of
assault or threatening behaviour against WA public school staff in 2022.
(1) Are the
figures for reports of assault or threatening behaviour available for 2023;
and, if not, when are they likely to be released?
(2) If the
figures are available, how many of those reported assaults were committed by
adults and how many by minors; and, if the figures are still being processed,
is a breakdown of that nature available for the 2022 figures?
(3) Does the
Cook government intend to bring forward legislation, as it has for retail
workers, to make it a specific offence to assault a teacher; and, if not, why
not?
