BYFORD TRAIN STATION
892. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the Treasurer:
I refer to the federal member for
Canning's comments recently that the outer metropolitan regional areas
like Serpentine Jarrahdale have been forgotten by this state government and
that, and I quote —
''Mike Nahan is very receptive
to a train station in Byford''
(1) Is the
federal member right that the Treasurer is very receptive about a new train
station and train extension to Byford?
(2) Has the Treasurer discussed his
enthusiasm for the Byford extension with the Minister for Transport?
(3) Is it the Treasurer's
view that the Byford extension should be a priority project?

(1)–(3) I talk to a lot of people,
particularly the member for Canning. He makes a great contribution to federal
politics and he will go far. We discuss a lot of issues. I discussed with him
the importance of the Perth Freight Link. He is a strong supporter of the Perth
Freight Link, as most sensible people are. It is a very sensible program. He
raised a number of issues about his electorate with me, including the Byford
line and the train station.
Mr
D.J. Kelly interjected.
Dr M.D. NAHAN : The member is not relevant; he should just
go. He is just a union hack. The member for Canning is a serious politician,
not a blow-in from the union movement, like the member. Anyway, I will get back
to the issue at Byford.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Through the Chair; let us go, thank you.
Dr M.D. NAHAN : I am ready to go. The member for Canning
has been arguing for Byford station and the train‑line extension from
Armadale. I said it was a good idea and I pointed him to my colleague to
promote it. That is the way we do things.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for West Swan!
Dr M.D. NAHAN : They are children! The
game here is that they are trying to pretend that they are the champions of
public transport, but in the last 10 years who has built a major facility? Who
built the Forrestfield–Airport
Link and
Gateway? Members opposite believe that only they can think about transport—well,
watch this space!
