Given that the Government has done little in the 2004-05 state budget to address the deteriorating condition of country roads, including the Bussell Highway between Vasse and Margaret River known as “death alley”, I ask - (1) Why is there no substantial budget to fix the Narrogin to Hyden Road, which was described at the country regions council of Western Australia committee meeting on 10 May 2004 as the most dangerous piece of road in Western Australia? (2) What are the Government’s plans to upgrade this road given that it carries up to 100 000 tourists to Wave Rock at Hyden every year as well as local traffic, heavy vehicles and school buses? (3) What is the cost estimate to make this road safe and when does the Government plan to begin a full upgrade? Dr G.I. GALLOP

I apologise for the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure who is not with us today. I will be happy to respond to the question. I have been advised that - (1) The Government acknowledges the need to upgrade the road to Hyden and $5 million has been allocated in the 2004-05 state budget and forward estimates for Brookton Highway to continue these works on the section between Corrigin and Hyden. Expenditure on this section of road in the current year is estimated to be $3.34 million by 30 June 2004. (2) The funds provided in the 2004-05 state budget and forward estimates will enable a continuation of the works to widen and improve this road. (3) The estimated cost to upgrade this section of road is $30 million. Some $10.35 million will have been spent by 30 June this year, $7.3 million of which has been spent since Labor came to Government.
