VERVE ENERGY - WATER CONSUMPTION
I refer to the use of water by Verve Energy for its coal-fired power stations. (1) Is the water consumption - (a) metered; or (b) charged on a volumetric basis? (2) If yes to (1)(a), how much water has been consumed since Verve commenced operations? (3) If yes to (1)(b), what is the price paid a gigalitre? (4) If no to (1)(a) or (b), why not? (5) How much of the water consumed is used for cooling and steam-raising purposes? That question was rewritten by some other person. Hon JON FORD

I answer on behalf of the Leader of the House. I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Water Resources has supplied the following answer - (1) (a) Yes. The water consumption by Verve Energy is metered, as required by associated water licence conditions. (b) No. Water consumption is not charged on a volumetric basis. (2) Approximately 20 gigalitres of water has been used by Verve Energy to supply two power stations over a 12-month period. (3) Not applicable. (4) Currently, the government does not charge water users on a volumetric basis; it charges only a water licence administration fee. The government will consider the introduction of water resource management charges as part of the water reforms for Western Australia once a nationally consistent approach is adopted and substantial progress is made on water reform in Western Australia. This includes the completion of statutory water management plans and the establishment of longer-term secure water access entitlements. (5) Metered data results provided to the Department of Water do not differentiate the uses of water. However, from knowledge of the actual operations, the majority of water is used for cooling and steam-raising purposes.
