My question relates to the mortality of two southern brush-tailed phascogales, or wambengers, Phascogale tapoatafa , now at the Western Australian Museum and found near the Great Eastern Highway adjacent to the illegal clearing at the lakes, 50 kilometres east of Perth. (1) Will the minister advise whether the area that the specimens originally came from has been investigated to determine whether their death was a consequence of the clearing? (2) What action will be taken under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 with respect to these mortalities? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The following response has been provided by the minister - (1) An investigation will not be undertaken, as the distance between the site of the road deaths of the two wambengers and the clearing of the lake site is well in excess of the normal home-range movements of this fauna species. (2) The road deaths of the two wambengers is considered to be accidental following collisions with motor vehicles. It is therefore not intended to pursue the matter under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.
