Is there evidence of continuing dissent among conservative ranks about the progress of plans for stages 6 and 7 of Roe Highway? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the member for the question, and once again I compliment the work that the member is doing to finalise the route for stage 7 of Roe Highway. I am confident that we will overcome these internal disputes - the internecine wars - within the coalition ranks. Members will recall that last week we showed that Mayor Mair from the City of Melville had distanced herself from the campaign spearheaded by the member for Murdoch. That highly intelligent campaign is to get the federal Government to withdraw $46 million worth of funding so that stage 7 of Roe Highway cannot be built. That is a very sensible and intelligent strategy as it would result in trucks pouring down the suburban streets in which the member’s constituents live! We now have evidence of - Mr M.F. Board interjected. The SPEAKER: The member for Murdoch! Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The member is a disgusting creature. We will not let the bully of Cottesloe, “Cabernet Col”, get away with his insults. This is an important issue. I know that people in the southern suburbs, particularly in the electorate of Murdoch, have grave concerns about this proposed strategy. Members need to understand that we are getting very mixed messages from the Liberal Party. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas interjected. The SPEAKER: The member for Carine! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The member for Carine has told members in this Parliament that the federal transport minister, Mr John Anderson, is likely to withdraw funding from stages 6 and 7 of Roe Highway because, as she claims, there was a commitment from the then State Government to an eighth stage. I received a very interesting letter from another mayor - the Mayor of Canning. The Mayor of Canning was so concerned about the program spearheaded by the member for Murdoch and the federal Attorney-General, Mr Daryl Williams - Mr M.F. Board interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! Mr M.F. Board interjected. The SPEAKER: The member for Murdoch! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The Mayor of Canning wrote to the federal minister and said that the council was concerned about this bizarre proposal to withdraw funding for stage 7 of Roe Highway. His letter to me quotes the reply he received from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister. It reads - Several opposition members interjected. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: They do not want to hear it, but they will have to hear it. It may be now, or it may be in five minutes. The SPEAKER: Members! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The letter reads - . . .“the Commonwealth’s commitment was linked to Stages 6 and 7 and was not dependent on the construction of Stage 8” . . . “given that the extension of Roe Highway to Kwinana Freeway meets the RONI guidelines and Federal funding has already commenced, the Minister does not believe it is appropriate to withhold further Commonwealth funding for the Roe Highway extension.” The Opposition is a rabble; it cannot decide which strategy to take. The Government is persisting with the construction of Roe Highway stages 6 and 7 and will not let the Opposition’s crackpot strategies deter it from that.

Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN replied: I thank the member for the question, and once again I compliment the work that the member is doing to finalise the route for stage 7 of Roe Highway.
