(1) In 2013, the names of 2,465 teachers were removed from the Register of Teachers (of these, 330 were subsequently returned to the register). From 1 January 2014 to 18 March 2014, the names of 935 teachers have been removed from the Register of Teachers (of these, 289 have been subsequently returned to the register).
(2) Note that 'membership' is a term that was used under the former Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT) but is not a term that is contemplated in the
Teacher Registration Act 2012
. Teachers are currently provided with the following notifications of their registration expiry date:
· A letter at the time of grant of registration.
· A reminder letter sent 8 weeks prior to expiry.
· If no action has been taken, a reminder email sent 25 days prior to expiry.
All registered teachers can access information about their registration expiry date online, via Teacher Login on the Teacher Registration Board website.
From 17 March 2014, a new online management tool for Principals and employers has been introduced. Through the Teacher Register Information (Professional), Principals and employers will have access to the registration expiry date of all of their teachers.
(3) As noted in the response to (2), 'membership' is not a term contemplated in the
Teacher Registration Act 2012
. Information on renewal of registration and policy with respect to professional learning obligations of teachers is available through the Teacher Registration Board website.
(4) The full time equivalent staff of the Teacher Registration Directorate (which is part of the Department of Education Services) as at 13 March 2014 is 32.63.
(5) The budgeted expenditure for 2013-14 is $4.735 million.
(6) 51,335 at 12 March 2014.
(7) Note that 'Probationary' is not a category of registration that is contemplated in the
Teacher Registration Act 2012
. The number of teachers who hold Provisional Registration as at 12 March 2014 was 10,202.
(8) As noted in the response to (7), 'Probationary' is not a category of registration that is contemplated in the
Teacher Registration Act 2012
. A key part of the transition from Provisional to Full Registration is an assessment of whether a teacher meets the Professional Standards at the proficient level. In general terms, an assessment of whether the Professional Standards at the proficient level have been met is based on a recommendation at the school/workplace level about the teacher meeting the Standards. In this context, it is important to note that the role of the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia is a regulatory one and it is not for the Board to ensure that teachers make the transition. Rather, the responsibility for ensuring that teachers meet the Professional Standards at the proficient level, and the other requirements for full registration, rests with individual teachers with the appropriate support of their employers.
