KIDSCULTURE PROGRAM
432. Ms E. EVANGEL to the
Minister for Culture and the Arts:
Can the minister please inform the house about a new culture
and arts initiative, supported by the state government, known as the
KidsCulture program?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for the question. There is much diversity
in the budget presented by the Treasurer last week on positive commitments to
the people of the state. I am pleased that this particular KidsCulture program
has been funded as a pilot program for the current 2013–14 financial
year. It is modelled on the KidSport program, which has been very successful
and has seen more than 13 000 children participate in a range of sporting
activities around the state.

Mr J.H.D. DAY : The
KidsCulture program is intended to be made available to young people between
the ages of five and 18 from low-income families. They will be provided with
vouchers of up to $200 to allow them to participate in community arts and
culture activities that they may not otherwise be able to participate in. They
may include music, dance, visual arts, literature and drama that are provided
by local government and/or not-for-profit organisations. Funding may be used
for assistance to pay for lessons or classes and/or associated equipment and
materials. As I said, it will be piloted over this financial year; the amount
of $140 000 is available, and the pilot program will occur in the City of
Stirling and the City of Albany. A memorandum of understanding is being
prepared to be agreed between the Department of Culture and the Arts and those
two local government authorities so that the program can be implemented. I
thank the City of Stirling, the City of Albany and the Department of Culture
and the Arts, and acknowledge the advice provided by the Department of Sport
and Recreation in developing this pilot program. I am sure it will be of
significant benefit to low-income families in the state, particularly in the
Cities of Stirling and Albany, to assist their children to gain this
experience.
