❓ A WA parliamentary question addresses midge infestation at Lake Goollelal, inquiring about measurement frequency, historical data, and the use of temephos and S-methoprene for control. The Minister provides data showing lower midge numbers in 2014 compared to previous years and outlines plans for continued temephos use and a potential S-methoprene trial.

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1) Midge larvae sampling at Lake
Goollelal last occurred on 10 September 2014.
(2) Results at
Lake Goollelal are lower this year compared with similar monitoring in previous
years. These results are as follows: 10 September 2014, midge larvae numbers
approximately 700 midge per square metre; 20 September 2013, midge larvae
numbers approximately 4 304 midge per square metre; 14 September 2012, midge
larvae numbers approximately 1 861 midge per square metre; 23 September 2011,
midge larvae numbers approximately 11 850 midge per square metre.
(3) Spraying of
temephos will continue as required over 2014–15 at Lake Goollelal to
supress nuisance midge.
(4) Trigger
levels for treating Lake Goollelal are midge larvae levels of between 2 000 to
5 000 midge per square metre, in conjunction with adult midge surveys and
public complaints. Treatments will occur on an as-needs basis and will be
undertaken by agreement between the City of Joondalup, the City of Wanneroo and
the Department of Parks and Wildlife, based on these triggers.
(5) It is
anticipated that a trial using S-methoprene will be undertaken at Lake
Goollelal during the 2015–16 midge season, subject to receiving
approval to trial S-methoprene.
