These regulations amend the Animal Welfare (Transport, Saleyards and Depots) (Cattle and Sheep) Regulations 2020 to provide a defence for livestock transporters charged with transporting unfit animals. The defence applies if the transporter took reasonable steps to assess the animal's fitness immediately before loading.
Livestock transporters are affected by this amendment. They may avoid charges if they can prove they took reasonable steps to assess an animal's fitness before transport. This may require implementing or documenting pre-loading assessment procedures.
