These regulations amend the Local Government (Administration) Regulations 1996 and the Local Government (Financial Management) Regulations 1996 to address the recovery of advance payments of fees and allowances to local government council members and require ministerial approval to write off these debts.
Local government council members who receive advance payments and cease to hold office or are suspended will be required to repay a portion of the advance. Local governments must recover these amounts as debts. Local governments also require ministerial approval to waive or write off these debts.
