Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle (STC Narelle) affected the Gascoyne and Pilbara regions in March 2026, causing widespread damage and disruption across several local government areas. Primary producers and small and medium businesses were significantly impacted, with flow-on effects for long-term local economic activity. Although Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements have been activated, the scale and ongoing nature of the impacts exceed the assistance currently available to these groups.

In response to the scale and ongoing nature of the impacts of STC Narelle, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has sought and been granted approval to expand the Government’s response through the SBDC by providing targeted financial and business advisory support to affected primary producers and small and medium businesses (the Target Groups). The services are intended to help participants address immediate financial and business impacts from STC Narelle, while also strengthening their capability, preparedness and long-term resilience for future natural disasters.
