Background: The use of video conferencing within the ODPP serves as a critical mechanism for maintaining the effective and uninterrupted functioning of the justice system in Western Australia. Due to the state's extensive geographical expanse, numerous witnesses are located in remote or regional communities far from court facilities, with some residing interstate and overseas. Current Situation Video conferencing has become increasingly common and practical since the COVID19 pandemic, which significantly accelerated their use across the justice sector. They are particularly beneficial when a witness is required only for a short period, as appearing remotely may be more efficient for both the witness and the court. However, video conferencing also presents certain challenges, including the risk of non-attendance or reduced engagement, as some witnesses may become distracted or fail to remain alert during their appearance. These factors must be considered when determining whether a remote appearance is appropriate.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for WA awarded an estimated $250,000 contract via Limited Sourcing to WHYGO Pty Ltd. Two submissions were received.
